24: Stan Ouro
Jeff: (Ref: Remember this strip?) You know, images like this one are why I love um, really appreciate working with Jeremy. No possible way I could pull off anything even closely approximating the poetry in still-life-motion of particularly the closeup of Stan on the left, and the J.Lo “Waiting for Tonight”-ish groove of the top.
Crap, hang on. Think I just lost some indie cred there for a moment…
Jeremy: That is supposing you had any “indie cred” to begin with, Jeff. Might I recall a certain conversation we had where you told me about a particularly rebellious evening of jamming out to “Only The Good Die Young” by Billy Joel in your church’s parking lot? But thanks for saying I draw all neat-o and stuff. :blushes:
So, Jeff’s lame music rebellion indie cred aside, we see that Balthazar had his special focus comic, and now it’s Stan’s turn! This particular style of comic once again opens up the doors to more creativity with visual layout, so it is a fun challenge to see what ways I can make the art flow outside of the standard 3-4 panel rectangle/square format. I am really pleased with the way this turned out, not only because I enjoyed the process of telling the story in a different way visually once again, but also because I feel like I am starting to get a more solid handle on Stan’s look.
Balthazar’s look was based on a caricature of myself that I had been doodling with for a while before this comic came into being, and even in the span of the several months since we started publishing this comic, Bal’s visual style has been honed further, resulting in his current look. Stan was a character that was created just for the comic, and I settled on his initial look pretty quickly, without too many alternate iterations. He has not had too many visual changes, but I think I am finally getting the subtleties of his face structure down a little better (less jowl-y cheeks, better shape to his hair, etc.). Since I had gotten Bal down to a visual creation formula that I liked, it was time to focus more on defining Stan’s look a little better from the initial style. So, all that to say, I am getting to a point where Stan is looking a little more pleasing to my eyes and brain.
What do you guys think? Is there a particular Ouro Bros. comic where you really liked how a given character looked? Are the characters continually looking better, or did you like the way a certain character looked in a previous iteration? I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter…

HOT DANG!!!!
I’m jealous of Bal and Stan’s glamorous, yet whimsical and carefree lifestyle. Must be nice, to not be bound to the system and catering to the whim of the man. Bastards.
Well, you too can enjoy this life! Just sell everything you own, including your home, trade your rooted lifestyle for a van and no uncertain place to stay each night, and hope the money you set aside from the sale of your life is enough to get you to the next town when your cut of the door charge isn’t enough to pay for gas money! It’s an easy step to make! 😉
Chris, Get a Gravitar…STAT
Move the eyes so Stan is looking a little more forward and take away or change the text at the top and I think you’ve got your first T-shirt right there!
Congratulations y’all on the 1 year anniversary of this awesome webcomic and tour. Great use of some new Onomatopoeia’s in today’s strip. The boys are definitely “FASHION’D”.
I love Bal’s answer of “fewer pie stains” versus “No pie stains”. Keep up the great work guys, can’t wait to see what the next year has in store. You do know though you have officially spoiled me to a strip a day. Just sayin’. 🙂
Thanks, Todd!
We will have to offer a week of updates again! In the… not so… near… future 😉
Yep–“fewer” is what makes that line funny.
Happy Anniversary guys. And here’s to many more. 🙂
Thanks, Mom by partnership!
BEPANTS’D! 🙂
Wait, wait, wait!
Did they ever find a place to stay for the night?
Or did that get messed up because it turned from Elle’s plan to Stan’s plan?
